Grace Mwatate Children’s Home
Grace Mwatate Children’s Home and Rescue Centre provides a permanent home for up to fifty vulnerable and orphaned children aged 3-18.
Grace Mwatate Children’s Home & Rescue Centre provides a safe and loving home, access to education, and the support the children need to build a brighter, more hopeful future.
Many children in Mwatate face extreme poverty, neglect, abuse and abandonment. Without support, they are left to fend for themselves, often being subjected to abuse or life on the streets. Education, healthcare, and even basic needs like food and shelter become unattainable.
At Grace Mwatate, we believe that every child deserves to feel safe, be loved, and be given the chance to reach their full potential. Our home is more than just a shelter—it is a place of healing, hope, love and transformation.

The Development of the children’s home
In 2015, thanks to the generosity of two key donors, Education Exchange was able to purchase land, marking the beginning of our vision to build a new children’s home. Construction officially began in February 2017 and it is our most ambitious project to date. Through a diverse range of fundraising efforts, including £10,000 raised by co-founder Tim Shorten during the London Marathon, we successfully secured over £35,000 to bring this project to life.
By August 2018, the children moved into their new home, now known as Grace Mwatate Children’s Home. In early 2019, four trustees visited the home and were moved by the warmth and care evident among both staff and children. In October 2019, a generous donation from a long-term supporter enabled us to purchase additional land behind the home. This space is currently used as a small farm to teach children essential animal-rearing skills with chickens and goats. It also provides food for the children after harvest.
Over the years, trustees have regularly visited Grace Mwatate Children’s Home to assess its needs and ensure the well-being of the children. During their most recent visit in 2025, they discovered that many children were sharing beds. To provide each child with their own safe and comfortable space, 10 new bunk beds were purchased. Additional essential upgrades were also made, including new tables and chairs, a shoe rack, a bookshelf, and a food store, further improving the home’s living and learning environment.
Looking ahead, our vision is to develop a vocational school on the farm site, and we are actively seeking financial support to turn this goal into a reality.
Meet our staff.
Meet Edith and Habel, two key staff members at the childrens home. They both work tirelessly to provide a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment for the children, ensuring that each child feels loved, valued, and able to reach their full potential. They offer emotional support, access to education, and teach the children general life skills, enabling them to build a brighter future in spite of their difficult start to life.

Success Stories
Below are some of the children who once called our home theirs—they have gone on to build careers, support their families, and give back to their communities. From teachers or mechanics we are very proud of our children and pleased to have been part of their journeys.
